With Noble/Kouyate/Obiang and Song we are over-loaded with the same type of player.

What a load of shit goal celebrations on MotD2's feature.

Bobby Moore's "calmly pick the ball up and take it back to the centre spot" would have added a touch of class.

Can't believe we played 3 defensive midfield players yet when shelvey dropped ten yards into space no one went with him and we just allowed him to dictate the game. Payet would loved to have that space unfortunately teams know what would happen if he did so they make sure he doesn't get it

We needed a midfielder to take control of that game in the second half yesterday and no-one was capable of doing it. Everytime they got the ball they turned back around and passed it back to Collins or Ogbonna.

Winners want the ball.

Sir Alf...
Agreed...

I've seen a lot of Newcastle games on the net...the difference was predictable for me...as Wijnaldum...Sissoko...Mitrovic all have pace and mobility...I predicted on the match thread Wijnaldum would score...

We suffered from our slow as treacle MF...

No show by Payet...below par Antonio and Valencia...

I had hoped Payet would provide the passes for Antonio and Valencia as he did at Bournemouth...Didn't happen...they were running around with very few quality passes to them...

Jelavic had one of his better games...and took his gift goal well..

Combination of bad day all round...except Adrian...Dodgy MF...and no show Payet...

Plus one of Toon's best performances by their key players...

10 goal attempts...3 on target for us...20+ for them...at least 10 on target

Was surprised by Shelvey's impact...first half...

Move on...I'm sure the 2 away games with lots of mileage was a contributory factor...

It's tough scoring without Payet...Lanzini...even Carroll would have made a difference...

Yes, you can be sure we'll be well up for this game and start with the right tempo, as if we don't there's a chance we'll get mullered if we let them play.

We didn't play well and lost. Shit happens.

I bet Man City aren't looking forward to visiting us next weekend. No reason we can't turn them over.

Yeah it has been a problem. In the overall scheme of things its one defeat in 10 and we are almost safe from relegation in Jan :-)

I think our team or squad struggles with the high pressing game. Under Allardyce we sat deep and relied on compact defence and the direct ball to the big man. Bilic is trying to get us to pass our way out of defence, play through midfield and the transition is going to take time and probably different players.

For me, Kouyate is a good strong player running with the ball but technically not good enough. Obiang was taken off yesterday but I still think he was better than Noble and Kouyate (not saying much). Antonio is strong running forward and quick but again technically struggles with passing and control. So I guess I am saying to get to the next level we need to upgrade our midfield with better, more mobile, technical players but ones that work too. Noble struggled more than the rest with the pressing game as he needed time and space but he was not alone.

Up front we need another strong running, athletic forward but they will cost a lot.

But we always knew i would take time and we are progressing. Top 10 would be progression and top 8 seems the more realistic goal. Aim as high as we can of course

Sir Alf 12:36 Sun Jan 17

It's a mystery Alf. Once again another slow start. Can't we start with intensity as well. Sure we have started games with a good tempo. On occasions, the other team have only led by one goal before we have got going later in the game, but two goals was too much to come back from.

Did not see the game, however in the match at the Boleyn Janmaat, looked a great prospect as RB. I liked his pace, good defensively and he got forward a lot and was their best player on the day.

How did he play up there? is he an option we should consider for the RB space in the summer?

Re: Newcastle v West Ham - Official Match Thread FT 2-1
We lost, we move on. Yet again we made a slow start in comparison to the opposition. Bilic referred, not for the first time, to how Newcastle were more up and at things compared to us. It really needs to be sorted. Two goal deficits are harder to pull back but when we upped our game, and had a better formation, we had a couple of genuine chances to equalise.

This performance and result should help us get a realistic perspective on how our season will pan out.
